Soft and sultry to some, rough and romantic to others; however you
want to describe it, you still end up with Marianne Faithfull’s
unique vocals. Her new album Horses and High Heels, is a mixture of
slow and rocking blues. Marianne has put out over 20 albums
throughout her career.
She has blossomed from the sweet young angelic voice of our youth to
the mature matriarch of rock n roll that we all love.
The record starts out slow and easy, with tunes such as “The
Stations” and “Why did we have to fall apart”, only to pick up tempo
with “No Reason and “Prussian Blue”. The song “Love Song”, is a soft
romantic song that makes you feel like you are at the beach with its
haunting tone, that reminds me of the rushing of the waves. The song
“Gee Baby”, has a swanky sound that makes ya wanna go for a spin
around the dance floor with your beau, with lyrics like “I’d like to
make you all mine” you are sure to win his heart. “Going Back”, is
written by Carole King and Garry Goffin, and has a soft sound that
is beautifully written, but not quite my cup of tea. “Past present
and future” has spoken word lyrics that is nice. The title track
“Horses and High Heels” is another slow one that tells a love story,
that grips your heart, and makes you yearn for the European streets
that the horses hoofs pound on.
“Back in baby’s arms” has a slow blues overtone, that is highlighted
by wonderful background vocals. “Eternity” picks the tempo back up,
with a worldly sound that echoes sounds from far away places, with a
touch of Ballywood. The final song “This old house”, again slows the
tempo back down and tells a story of what is left when our parents
are gone and all that is left is the old house.
This album, is another classic from Marriane Faithfull, was recorded
in New Orleans and uses local musicians; with guest apperances from
John Portrer, Lou Reed, Dr. John and
Wayne Kramer.
She has a mature sound to her voice, that requires a certain taste.
I am a fan of songs with a quick beat that makes me happy. This is
far from that, but could be enjoyed with a nice glass of wine and a
roaring fire when you want to set a certain mood.
