Sonny Vincent's latest offering is a wonderful explosion of sound. When you think back to Sonny's days with the Testors, one of the most influential, but completely overlooked 1970's New York Punk Rock bands, this isn't so far removed from those sounds.
A true rock 'n roll survivor, Sonny has gotten together with members of Rocket From The Crypt and extended his timeline by yet another incredible release. His unique brand of straight out guitar-based rock n roll with 'right-to-the-point' lyrics makes for very pleasing listening. Right from the word 'go' on the opening track 'Pick Up The Slack', Sonny shreds his guitar in that same old familiar fashion, never deviating from this style, and why would he? This is how you do it, folks!
Recorded in San Diego, California, this release was mastered and finalised in Germany by John Reis, AKA Speedo, and he managed to capture the vitality and energy of this original artist, exactly as he wants it! Sonny is no slouch on guitar either, he certainly knows his fretboard, and hammers out a great tone on that old black Custom. The songs flow nicely and there's a real sense of accomplishment throughout. The second track 'It's Not Your Fault' keeps a frenetic pace, with its scratching guitar and fast paced beat and 'I Can't Do That, Can't Do That' backing vocal, 'it's not your fault, but that's the way its gotta be'...great line!
'Through My Head' and 'Dream' keep up the pace, but the next track is 'Her Hand' and this one takes a more relaxed approach. Don't confuse relaxation with sloppy...this is a killer track that would have sounded right in place on the stage at max's kansas city, back in the day!
'Pieces' has some of the best lyrics I think I've ever listened to. Played at a Ramones-esque pace, it goes..'I am very sorry about your letter, I ripped it up and threw it on the floor, Then I tried to put it back together, now the words are changed forever more'.....absolute quality writing!
The remaining songs on this album follow in pretty much the same style. Sonny has got it right once again and the success of his recent European Tour is testament to this guy...he'll simply go on forever!
