Suzi Quattro Pleasure Seeking!

Leather and rock n roll go together perfectly, and no girl had done this right til Suzi Quatro. She has influenced many a girl headed for the music business, and I am no different. I remember oh to well the days of my youth, and listening to her tunes and wanting to be just like her. Not until years later did I realize that she had siblings that were also in the business, and their impact on the industry. I am now proud to call Patti Quatro my friend, and a major player in this interview, your help and friendship will be forever appreciated. I understand that your father was in the music business, what exactly did he do
and is he what inspired you kids to go into the business?

SUZI: HE WAS AN ALL ROUNDER.. STARTED AS CHILD PRODIGY ON VIOLIN..PLAYED ALL KEYBOARDS, ACCORIDAN, AND A LITTLE BASS.. PLUS UKELELE.

PATTI: ART WAS A PIANIST, AND HAD A WELL KNOWN BAND THROUGH THE MICHIGAN REGION, POPULAR AT EVENTS, COUNTRY CLUBS, WEDDINGS, ETC, COMPOSED OF VERY FINE MUSICIANS. WITH 5 CHILDREN, ART HAD TO BALANCE HIS DREAM OF WORKING IN THE ENTERTAINMENT FIELD, WITH HIS NECESSARY GM JOB, WORKING DAY AND NIGHT AT BOTH PROFESSIONS.
WE GREW UP IN A VERY MUSICALLY CREATIVE FAMILY, NURTURED WITH PIANO AND VOCAL LESSONS, AND OTHER INSTRUMENTS THROUGH SCHOOL, WITH MUSIC AROUND THE FAMILY PIANO OFTEN AND AT HOLIDAYS.

AS FAR AS DAD INSPIRING US.....ONLY AS NURTURING OUR MUSICAL TALENTS.....
FOR SUZI IT WAS SEEING ELVIS ON TV, AND HEARING DAD SAY HE WAS DISGUSTING AND TRYING TO TURN TV OFF.......SHE FELT A SENSE OF.....THAT'S FOR ME!!!!!


FOR ME, SEEING A HUGE CONCERT, HAVING A MOMENT WATCHING TEENS AROUND ME SCREAMING AND CRYING, OUTTA CONTROL......THAT MOMENT STAYED WITH ME, AND I CALLED MY FRIENDS TO START AN ALL GIRL BAND.

You are from Detroit, how do you think this may have influenced you musically?

SUZI: DETROIT WAS A COMPLETE INFLUENCE , ALL ENCOMPASSING.. BOTH FOR MOTOWN MUSIC.. AND THE WHITE ROCK MOVEMENT. GOT MY BASS PLAYING STYLE FROM JAMESON...AND THE ENERGY FROM THE CITY..
IT IS ONE OF A KIND

PATTI: WE LIVED A RENAISSANCE ERA....PICTURE MOTOWN INFLUENCE COLLIDING WITH ENGLISH INVASION, ACID ROCK, AND THAT SPECIAL RAW "GRIT" BLUE COLLAR ENERGY OF DETROIT ROCK CITY .....MUSIC OF DETROIT WAS LIKE BREATHING
OXYGEN.....MAGIC HAPPENED! AND ALL OF US HOMETOWN BANDS (MC5, SEGER, NUGENT, ALICE, IGGY, ETC) FED CREATIVELY OFF EACH OTHER.
RIGHT OUT OF THE MOTOR CITY CAME THE TEENAGE CALL TO ARMS HEARD ALL OVER THE WORLD.....LIKE A SILENT SCREAM OF A GENERATION FINALLY VOCALIZED......"KICK OUT THE JAMS MOTHERFUCKERS" (MC5).
THAT LINE ENCAPSULATES THE RAW SEETHING DETROIT ENERGY THAT INFLUENCED US.

Out of all the kids, who went into music first, and what are some of the highlights of your careers?

SUZI: WE WERE ALL INTO MUSIC AS THE AGE PERMITTED.. SO IT WENT FROM OLDEST TO YOUNGEST... I STARTED ON BONGO'S.. MY DAD LET ME PLAY WITH HIM SOMETIMES.. PAID ME 25 CENTS!!...THEN TOOK PIANO LIKE WE ALL DID.. THEN PLAYED IN THE PERCUSSION SECTION AT SCHOOL (THE ONLY GIRL AND FIRST CHAIR TOO!!)..THEN AT 14 TAUGHT MYSELF BASS.
I ALSO PLAY GUITAR WELL ENOUGH TO WRITE ON.

PATTI: MICHAEL WAS CHILD PRODIGY ON LAWRENCE WELK SHOW AS TEEN, WAS FIRST. THEN ALL OF US AS GROWING UP....SISTERS STARTED THE BAND TOGETHER AT 14 AND 16, WITH OUR FIRST SINGLE OUT THAT YEAR ON HIDEOUT RECORDS. THAT SONG, "WHAT A WAY TO DIE" BECAME SOMEWHAT OF A CULT THING, WAS IN A MOVIE AND WELL KNOWN BEER DRINKING SONG BY THE PUNKY PLEASURE SEEKERS.

RE: HIGHLIGHTS OF CAREER......I HAVE PERSONALLY FULFILLING ONES:

MOST FULFILLING WAS THE FAR EAST TOUR, PLAYING ACOUSTIC GUITAR TO DISTRACT BLOODIED MEN (FROM VIETNAM) AWAITING SURGERY WITH A SOFT SONG....GRAPHIC VISUALS....ONE GUY, ARMS HANGING FROM STIRRUPS, BLINDED WITH SHRAPNEL, TURNS HIS HEAD, AND ASKS FOR "TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS" BY OTIS....IT WAS HARD TO KEEP OUR COMPOSURE.

ANOTHER....THERE WAS A FAN WITH TERMINAL CANCER TELLING ME THAT "DREAM" (CRADLE SONG) WAS HER "BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS", THAT SHE LISTENS TO IT EACH DAY TO KEEP HER FIGHTING ANOTHER DAY.....THAT ABOUT DOES IT FOR ME......TOUCH SOMEONE, EQUALS JOB WELL DONE.

ANOTHER....FILMING "SHE ROCKS" DOCUMENTARY (OUT SOON) FINALLY DOCUMENTING THE AMAZING JOURNEY OF FEMALE MUSICIANS AND WHAT THEY HAVE HAD TO GO THROUGH TO JUST ROCK THEIR MUSICAL DREAMS IN A MALE DOMINATED PROFESSION.



 

Who’s idea was it to start the band, the Pleasure Seekers?

SUZI: WE ALL HAVE A DIFFERENT MEMORY.. BUT MINE IS.. AFTER SEEING THE BEATLES ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW.. PHONE RINGS.. TWO SISTERS, MARYLOU AND NAN ON THE LINE.. SCREAMING.. SO EXCITED.. THEN I THINK PATTI SAID,
'WHY DON'T WE START AN ALL GIRL BAND'... EVERYONE AGREED.. AND THEN THE INSTRUMENTS WERE CHOSEN.. NOBODY TOOK THE BASS SO IT WAS GIVEN TO ME.. AND I HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK.

PATTI: I HAD CALLED MY TWO FRIENDS TO START IT UP EARLIER. WE NEEDED MORE MEMBERS, SO WE DECIDED TO BRING IN THE YOUNGER SISTERS, AND THE PLEASURE SEEKERS WAS BORN. SUZI WANTED DRUMS (ALREADY PLAYING BONGOS), BUT THE OLDER GIRL TOOK THAT. WE HAD A BASS AT HOME, SO I TOLD SUZI SHE HAD TO TAKE THAT, AND LEARN IT.....TAUGHT HERSELF. THE BASS WAS AS BIG AS SHE WAS TALL.

What were some of the memorable gigs for the band?

SUZI: OBVIOUSLY THE FIRST GIG.. FOR ME IT WAS LIKE COMING HOME.. WHERE I BELONGED. ALSO....A FEW GIGS IN.. WE WERE ON THE FLOOR IN A GYMNASIUM.. NOBODY COULD SEE ME. SO THEY PUT ME UP ON A TABLE TO SING... WE DO 'DO YOU LOVE ME'... I SAW ALL THESE PEOPLE BELOW GOING CRAZY..
AND I LET OUT THIS SCREEEEEEEAAAAAAAM...THE CROWD WENT CRAZY AND IT HAS BEEN MY SIGNATURE EVER SINCE... YOU CAN HEAR IT ON 'CAN THE CAN'

PATTI: FOR ME, THE FIRST HIDEOUT GIG, KNEW THIS WAS MY PATH....JUST FELT RIGHT. FAVE TIMES WERE ALL THE JAMS WITH BANDS OF THE DAY.......FESTIVALS WERE A BLAST, WHERE HUGE TALENT ALL CAME TOGETHER. WE TOURED SO MUCH THERE WEREN'T MANY WE DID NOT PLAY WITH AT SOME TIME.



What happened that made you leave the band, and was it a hard decision?

SUZI: MICKI MOST CAME TO DETROIT.. MY BROTHER GOT HIM TO COME AND SEE 'CRADLE'... HE LIKED THE BAND BUT SAW SOMETHING IN ME THAT HE THOUGHT HE COULD MAKE INTO A STAR.. OFFERED ME A SOLO CONTRACT, IN ENGLAND.. TO RECORD, AND PUT A BOY BAND TOGETHER WITH ME... EMOTIONALLY IT WAS A HARD DECISION , WE WERE FAMILY AFTER ALL... BUT PROFESSIONALLY I WOULD BE LYING IF I DIDN'T SAY I HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THAT CHANCE SINCE THE BEGINNING... I HAD A SENSE OF MY DESTINY THAT NOTHING AND NOBODY COULD SHAKE.

PATTI: TO ROUND OUT SUZI'S ANSWER....IT WAS A ROUGH ERA FOR GIRL BAND, THOUGHT OF AS "NOVELTY" BY "SUITS". MOUNTAIN AND JEFF BECK WANTED TO GET US INTO STUDIO (JEFF WAS THEN WITH MICKI MOST).
WE HAD MUCH RESPECT FROM OUR PEERS. IT ALL TOO LONG AND WE WERE FRUSTRATED. JEFF BECK HAD ACCIDENT AND SPLIT WITH MICKI. MICKI DID NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH AN ALL GIRL UNIT....LIKED SUZI AS AN ANDROGYNOUS LOOK.....THOUGHT SHE HAD WIDE APPEAL TO BOYS, GIRLS, GAY, WHATEVER.
WE WERE ALL FRUSTRATED BY THEN BY THE GENDER BIAS TO BREAK A FEMALE GROUP IN A MALE DOMINATED SCENE, WITH SUZI READY TO FLY, AND AFTER ANOTHER YEAR OF CRADLE, I ALSO WENT OFF TO A CLASSICAL ROCK GROUP WITH
BRO, MIKE, THEN FANNY CALLED. OUR FEMALE GROUP WAS SADLY AHEAD OF ITS TIME......MOST OF OUR PEERS FELT THAT TOO.
EXECUTIVES DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH US, AND FIGURED GIRLS WOULD FALL IN LOVE, MARRY, JUST DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE THAT CHANCE, IN AN ERA WHERE WOMEN ONLY SANG, AND WERE PRETTY MUCH BUTTONED UP AND PIGEONHOLED.
JUST THE WAY IT ROLLED SO EARLY ON.


What inspired the leather look, and did you know at the time that you were starting a trend for female musicians to follow to this day?

SUZI: I WAS AN ELVIS FREAK... ALSO.. DID ACTUALLY LOVE LEATHER.. FIRST JACKET AT 14...THEN 68 COMEBACK SPECIAL.. AND I DECIDED I WANTED TO LOOK LIKE HIM...JUST BEFORE MY FIRST HIT CAME OUT.. MICKI AND I DISCUSSED THE LOOK.. I INSISTED ON LEATHER .. WE WENT BACK AND FORTH ARGUING.. HE THOUGHT IT WAS OLD FASHIONED BUT MY MIND WAS MADE UP.. THEN HE SUGGESTED A JUMPSUIT... GREAT.. JOB DONE....

RE INFLUENCE.. I DIDN'T REALISE IT AT THE TIME.. BUT I SURE DO NOW... AT THE END OF THE DAY , SOMEBODY HAD TO KICK THE DOOR DOWN.. AND THE JOB FELL TO ME....ONCE I HAD SUCCESS AS A SERIOUS FEMALE ROCK MUSICIAN. THE REST WAS EASIER FOR EVERYONE ELSE.. AND I AM EXTREMELY PROUD OF THAT.



 

You will always be remembered for your stint on Happy Days, did you know at the time that you were doing something that would be everlasting, and did you feel like you were selling out your rock and roll roots?

SUZI: I FEEL HONORED TO HAVE BEEN ON THAT SHOW.. GREAT SCRIPTS, GREAT CAST.... GAVE ME A CHANCE TO TRY MY HAND AT ACTING... AND TO BE ABLE TO PLAY A ROCK AND ROLL GIRL.. PERFECT..

RE SELLING OUT.. YOU MUST BE JOKING.. SHOW ME ANYONE WHO WOULD 'NOT' HAVE DONE THAT SHOW GIVEN THE CHANCE.
I REMAINED ON THE ROAD DOING MY ROCKS SHOWS THROUGH OUT MY TIME ON HAPPY DAYS.. AND IN FACT.. MID HAPPY DAYS.. STUMBLIN IN WAS RIDING HIGH IN THE CHARTS IN THE USA.. SELLING A MILLION... SO I WOULD SAY IT WAS A GOOD DECISION ALL THE WAY AROUND.


In the mid 70‘s you came to Atlanta and opened for Albert King at Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom, an article was written about you in a local newspaper, it mentioned that you had many motorcycle enthusiast that met you at the airport when ever you flew in, and they followed you to your hotel, was this true and if so why?

BECAUSE OF THE ROCK MUSIC.. AND MY LEATHER IMAGE.. I DO HAVE A LOT OF MOTORCYCLE FANS.. AND HAVE DONE MANY MANY BIKER CONCERTS ALL OVER THE WORLD.. I ALSO HAVE A HUGE GAY FOLLOWING BOTH MALE AND FEMALE..
AND OF COURSE.. STRAIGHT GIRLS AND BOYS.. MICKIE MOST ALWAYS SAID MY APPEAL WOULD BE UNIVERSAL AND COVER ALL THE GROUND.

You have been an inspiration to many, and are an icon, these are big shoes to fill, and you do it with grace; what inspires you?

MY GOAL WAS ALWAYS TO BE MYSELF....TO NOT 'CHANGE' IN ORDER TO FIT IN WITH SOMEBODY ELSE VIEW OF ME.... I HAVE STUCK TO 'ME'... EVEN IF IT MEANT MAYBE I WOULD NOT HAVE SUCCESS BECAUSE THE WORLD WAS NOT READY..
I WAITED AND BELIEVED...I WANTED TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND TOUCH PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.. BUT I ALWAYS WANTED TO REMAIN NORMAL.. I HOPE I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED JUST THAT.

Patti, you joined the group Fanny, they were considered pioneers of the all girl band movement, did it makes things easier or more difficult that you were all girls?

PATTI: YES MANY FANS CONSIDER FANNY THE FIRST PIONEERS, THOUGH COMPLETELY INCORRECT, AS PLEASURE SEEKERS AND CRADLE WERE YEARS BEFORE (1964). ALWAYS FIND IT INTERESTING THAT I WAS IN 3 PIONEERING FEMALE GROUPS.
SMALL FEMALE COMMUNITY IN THAT ERA. RECORD EXECS WANTED LAS VEGAS BEAUTIES IN LAVISH COSTUMES WOWING THE CROWDS WITH OUR TINKLING ARRANGEMENTS OF HAPPY LITTLE TUNES.....PICTURE DONNA REED THE MUSICAL (60'S)......SO EARLY QUATRO DAYS WERE REALLY THE PIONEERING TIMES WHEN WE INSISTED ON ROCKING OUR MUSIC WITH THE BIG BOYS (LEGENDS). TEENAGE ANGST AND NOWHERE TO PUT IT BUT THE MUSIC, AND WE DID.
NEVER TOOK IN THE EXEC'S IDEAS OF WHO WE WERE--THEY COULD NOT SEE THE BIG PICTURE WHEN THEY HAD SUCH A SMALL SCREEN.
FANNY DID NOT HAVE THAT ISSUE BY TIME I WAS IN......MUCH MORE ACCEPTED AND WE HAD2 CHARTED SINGLES WITHIN ONE YEAR AFTER I JOINED.......IT WENT FAIRLY WELL. TOURED U.S. AND EUROPE WITH TULL. JUST FELT EASIER BY THEN.
TO SUM IT UP (YOU PROBABLY CAN'T USE THIS.........) I REMEMBER WHEN WE PLAYED WITH MOUNTAIN, LESLIE WEST WAS STANDING CHATTING WITH ME, FAN WALKS UP, SAYS THE USUAL LINE BACK IN THAT ERA....."BOY YOU ARE GOOD FOR GIRLS"........DEADPAN, MY STOCK REPLY WAS......."YEAH, WELL SUCK MY DICK"........LESLIE FALLS ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING.......



Patti, what inspired the reunion of the Quatro sisters, and what are the upcoming projects that you guys are working on and will it be rock oriented or a reflection past influences?

PATTI: WHILE MOVING, I FOUND A BOX OF 2-TRACK LIVE REEL TO REEL ORIGINALS OF EARLY QUATRO SISTERS. AN EXCITED ENGINEER WORKED GRATIS TO DIGITALIZE THE LIVE, RAW PERFORMANCES, FROM THE GRANDE BALLROOM, PRESERVING THE "DETROIT GRIT" OF A CLASSIC ROCK ERA OF DETROIT ROCK CITY MUSIC.
IN DOING SO, WE WANTED TO CORRECTLY AND FINALLY DOCUMENT THE EARLIEST OF THE HEAVY FEMALE ROCKER MUSICIANS IN 1964, TO GET THE HISTORY CORRECT. WE BASICALLY WANTED TO INSPIRE FEMALES TO KEEP ROCKIN THEIR MUSIC/DREAMS.

Patti, you seem to be the one that runs the online part of the show here, how does this effect the future of the Quatro sisters?

PATTI: SUZI IS FULL ON STILL TOURING, DOING BBC DOCUMENTARIES, AND STILL VERY BUSY WITH HER SOLO CAREER. NANCY AND I HANDLE THE RETROSPECTIVE SITES AND HISTORY OF THE QUATRO SISTERS.
THAT FORMULA WORKS VERY WELL FOR US, AND WE ARE HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE THE LONG LOST QUATRO EARLY MUSIC FINALLY OUT FOR THE PUBLIC TO ENJOY.

Now let’s get to Michael, so he was a wee lad on the Lawrence Welk show; how old was he when he began to play piano and keyboards...and I understand that he had some other major influences on the music scene in Detroit...let’s hear the good stories about some of the gigs..

PATTI: MIKE WAS A GIFTED CHILD PRODIGY ON KEYBOARDS, STARTED PIANO FROM A REKNOWNED CONCERT PIANIST WHEN HE WAS QUITE YOUNG, THEN BEING TAPPED FOR THE LAWRENCE WELK TV SHOW IN THE JUNIOR BAND.
HE KEPT ON PLAYING, HAD A BAND I PLAYED WITH AND CO-PRODUCED AN ALBUM WITH IN 1973, AND HE IS STILL PLAYING, STILL IN DETROIT.
SOME OF HIS OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS, LITTLE KNOWN: FIRST REGIONAL PROMOTER IN MICHIGAN AND SURROUNDING AREAS, AS FIRST TO BRING IN ROLLING STONES, JIMI HENDRIX, AND MANY OTHERS.
RAN MANY FESTIVALS AND CONCERTS. FIRST REGIONAL BOOKING AGENCY, HANDLING ALL THE HOMEBOYS: SEGER, NUGENT, ALICE, MC5, ETC.......DID A GREENPEACE CD A WHILE BACK, AMONG HIS CATALOGUE OF CD'S,
FEATURING A CLASSIC ROCK GENRE AND PERFORMED WITH A WALL OF KEYBOARDS (3 PIECE GROUP).

I REMEMBER ONE FESTIVAL WHERE A GROUP HAD TO CANCEL (ENGLISH GROUP) AND A PROBLEM TO FILL THE TIME SLOT. MIKE ORGANIZED COUPLE MEMBERS FROM ALL THESE NAME BANDS, INCLUDING US, TO MAKE "THE PLASTIC DIPSHIT BAND",
AND WE PULLED TOGETHER A JAM TO FILL THE SLOT.

And as for the garage...I understand that some interesting things happened in the Quatro garage, who were some of the people that “sat in” with the Quatro clan?

PATTI: NIGHT AFTER MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS ASSASSINATED.....THE PLEASURE SEEKERS WERE AT THE GORHAM HOTEL, NYC, WITH BLUES MAGOOS, NUGENT'S BAND, AND THE WHO IN RESIDENCE WITH US....INFAMOUS BAND HOTEL.
CONTACT HIGH JUST WALKING THRU HALLS!!!! KEITH MOON NAILS FURNITURE TO CIELING, TURNS ON SPRINKLERS. MAGOOS LIGHT THESE VERY POTENT FIREWORKS, THROWING THEM OUT OUR HOTEL WINDOW INTO A HUGE CONSTRUCTION
SITE NEXT DOOR. WHOLE SKY LIGHTS UP.......NEXTMINUTE, 15 COP CARS GOING THRU SITE AND HOTEL.......BANDS RUNNING THRU HALLS. OUR MANAGER THROWS US INTO BED, LIGHTS OUT, AND COPS COME TO OUR DOOR.......WE PLAY THE INNOCENTS....."WHATS GOING ON?????" LOTS OF ARRESTS WERE MADE, BUT WE GOT OFF SCOTT FREE....
JUST ANOTHER NIGHT AT THE GORHAM.



OUR GARAGE WAS A STOP FOR BANDS PLAYING DETROIT.....REMEMBER THE NIGHT JEFFERSON AIRPLANE IN TOWN.......JAM AT OUR GARAGE AFTERWARDS WITH JORMA AND JACK. THEM STONED ON ACID, PARENTS ASLEEP IN HOUSE.

HE THEN PROCEEDS TO ENTER GARAGE AND JOIN IN THE JAM, THEN BACK OFF TO BED.
