Almost 3 decades
ago, I came across a band called 'Voltage' in my hometown. They were playing gigs in and around the area
and receiving rave reviews for their no nonsense approach to rock music. This was at the tail-end of the Punk Movement and
mainstream was, as it is today, full of mediocrity, manufactured and highly polished shit! There was a new scene developing, a scene
that is in the midst of a full-blown revival - the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Voltage fitted like a glove and were forerunners
on the local scene. Headed up by the charismatic 'Crazy' Geoff Greenwood, Voltage blasted onto the stage with a new-look and
sound that was fresh and vital....well, that was almost 30 years ago and tonight, I'm back in my hometown to see the re-union
show!! Will they still rock?
Ok, if I said I was pleasantly surprised, I'd be telling a lie.....if I said I was shocked, I'd be understating....if I said I was fuckin' blasted
away, I'd be pretty much bang on!! Geoff and the new line-up never failed to deliver, from the opening chords of 'Lights Out' the
band hammered out an impressive set, featuring a couple of their favourite covers, 'Lil Devil' and 'Rosalie' being particularly good,
mixed in with some classic tracks of their own, such as 'Subway Walker' and 'When The Clock Strikes 12'.
The crowd had turned up in force to witness the bands triumphant return to rock n roll, and they were entertained to the end. It was
apparent towards the end of the long set, that Geoff was having slight trouble with his voice, having just shrugged off a winter cold,
but like the battle-hardened warrior he is, kept on going 'cos that's how ya do it!!! Kudos for that !!
The band were tight and credit to Geoff Hollows on guitar, having a number of other guitarists in the same room, scrutinising your
every note, kept a very cool head and showed that he is still right up there with the best. The remaining band members were as
tight as you would ever need, and rocked the house down to it's very foundations. Voltage are back Ladies & gents, they're BACK!!
Watch Out for more Voltage as they prepare for more gigs and recordings.....an original band, an original sound....Fuckin' awesome!!!
You don't need light shows and effects if ya got the right guys in ya band, and Geoff always has.....RESPECT BROs' !!!
See ya on the road in 2010, Chris x
