Stiff Records is proud to announce the debut album from Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby. Wreckless Eric was one of the original Stiff artists, releasing the legendary Whole Wide World back in 1977. Since then he has made countless albums in different guises, moving between bubblegum pop, grunge, psychedelic and techno but always remaining true to the DIY spirit of his early Stiff days. His last, Bungalow Hi, released in 2004 was described by Andrew Weatherall as sounding ‘like Bo Diddley trying to outdo Aphex Twin’.
Amy Rigby started a country band in eighties New York City, went on to form girl group The Shams, and began her solo career in 1996 with the US hit album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. Her five solo albums embrace pop, country, folk-rolk, Merseybeat, psychedelia and beach music.
“One of rocks most distinctive and consistently excellent songwriters” (Washington Post).
Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby is a beautifully raw and touching album: vocal harmonies, crackling, buzzing atmospheres and the upbeat/downbeat lyrics of a couple that have been one too many times around the dance floor. There are no other musicians involved here, just Eric on guitars, bass guitar and organ, Amy on guitars and piano, plus the odd sample, some well placed percussion and an old bossa nova beatbox.
It’s also a surprising reunion between Eric and Stiff Records, after an acrimonious break-up 28 years ago. Eric : “I got tired of people asking if I was bitter about how things went. It’s a long time ago now - in the words of an old Stiff slogan: He’s Not The Same, We’re Not The Same… When Trevor Horn and SPZ took over the label I called them. I said, ‘The music might be your property, but its my life. I don’t want to give you a hard time, I just want to get involved.’ And they said ‘great, that’s just what we want.’ We’ve had a good relationship for something like ten years now, so when we were looking for a label to release a new album Stiff was an obvious choice.”
Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby have been touring together for over two years now. They describe themselves as ‘a two piece rock ‘n’ roll group with vocal harmonies‘. They will be following a 25 date US tour in the autumn with a UK tour in November in support of the album.
